Adapting to the information ecosystem

In this post from the Scholarly Kitchen, Joe Esposito urges publishers away from retrenchment in “Publishing in the Google Ecosystem“.

ecosystemGoogle is now the defining entity in the information landscape. To flourish, as best as publishers can hope to flourish, it’s necessary to find a place within the Google ecosystem. There is no world elsewhere, no little pocket of commerce beyond the reach of Google’s audience aggregation, no opportunity to erect protectionist barriers or to appeal to the legacy of one’s own institutions. To those who resent Google’s huge bulk and ambition, it has to be said: Get over it.

Specifics in Esposito’s post, and moreso in David Crotty’s comments, provide a worthwhile glimpse into an industry doing the messy work of adapting to new environmental conditions, competitors and customer value assessments.

Radical Patron Library Photo Friday #8

Our community’s living room

Libraries are often referred to as their community’s living room. This is certainly true in West Boylston, MA especially during the holiday season.  The Beaman Library radiates comfort and community with its holiday tree, elegantly decorated in commemoration of volunteers and a large wooden carving with the words “Peace” hung over the fireplace, alongside a lovely homemade hanging quilt of books. Beaman Library is our community’s gift to one another.

Best wishes for the new year, Jean
