Helene Blowers, Digital Strategy Director for the Columbus Metropolitan Library, really gets it. Her work is an inspiration and I’ll spotlight more of it this week.
For now, check out what Helene and Kathy Dempsey have to say on the future of libraries.

Just how far out is their vision for the future? libraries are kept very busy working towards that which the people who come in our doors are asking – how do we reach these others who are looking for the all-digital works and the all-digital space to connect with their community? And, importantly, to what community do they owe their allegiance?
Libraries have been “dead” for over 20 years for some people but for many others are alive and welcoming change.
“All-digital” does seem to be all the rage now, doesn’t it? I’m hoping it’s a distraction we’ll eventually see beyond.
Blowers spoke of libraries finding their Phoenix. For me, part of that mythical re-creation will be helping people gain perspective on the role of information technology in their lives, to more clearly discern the differences between info and insight, and to reflect upon the layered meaning of community.
… pretty tall order I know, especially in the face of steadily declining resources.
